Tooth abcess definition
The tooth abscess means a pus cluster located at the root of the tooth or between the tooth and gum.
It can affect men and women, regardless of their age.
When the abscessed tooth is not taken care of, it can reach the bone of the tooth and spread locally, forming a serious infection: cellulitis, which has nothing to do with the homonym “cellulite” describing the “orange peel” effect.
Tooth abcess causes
The most common occurrence of dental abscess is:
- following untreated dental caries;
- following a broken tooth;
- after gum disease (periodontitis).

The tooth abscess is reflected in:
- swelling and redness of the gums;
- pain, especially when chewing.
It is essential to consult a dentist as soon as the infection appears.
In the absence of treatment, the dental abscess can cause:
- a fever;
- general fatigue;
- headaches.
In some cases, the pain can be relieved by a spontaneous discharge of pus.
Tooth abcess prevention councils
To avoid the appearance of a dental abscess and limit the risks, it is essential to adopt good oral hygiene, with brushing of the teeth three times a day after each meal.
Regular dental check-ups (twice a year in children, and in adults) with scaling are strongly recommended.
Limiting the consumption of sugar and tobacco is preferable because they promote the multiplication of microbes in the mouth.

During the consultation, the dentist performs an x-ray of the teeth to verify that the abscess has not reached the bone of the tooth.
After the treatment of the abscessed tooth , an X-ray check should be carried out a few weeks later. It confirms the disappearance of the abscess and if the tooth is very damaged, the installation of a crown can be considered.

Rinse your mouth well with cold water to relieve an abscessed tooth .
A local antiseptic in mouthwash can temporarily calm an abscess of the gum .
Against pain, prefer aspirin or ibuprofen (unless contraindicated) to paracetamol because of their anti-inflammatory action.
Treatment of dental abscess at the dentist
In order to remove the pus, the dentist proceeds, under local anesthesia, to the incision of the abscess if it is on the gum and establishes an antibiotic treatment.
However, if the lesion is at the end of the root, the practitioner cleans the inside of the dental canal which he then leaves in the open air.
He prescribed antibiotics and mouthwashes for a week.
When the treatment is finished, he fills the hole with a filling paste which allows the healing of the tooth.
Homeopathy
While waiting for the dental consultation, it is possible to take Pyrogenium 9 CH, 1 granule morning and evening.
As soon as the abscess appears, it is useful to take in addition:
- if the gum is pink, Apis mellifica 9 CH, 3 granules 3 times a day;
- when the mucosa is red, Belladonna 9 CH, 3 granules 3 times a day;
- if the gum is purple, Lachesis mutus 9 CH, 3 granules 3 times a day.
For a few days, alternate with Mercurius solubilis 5CH and Ferrum phosphoricum 5CH, 1 granule each every 2 hours.
